Going
Home is written for persons experiencing the personal grief and physical
limitations of dying. It balances
comforting thoughts about heaven with practical insights on living one’s final
days well. Divided into four
sections, it provides meditations, insights into handling relationships,
practical help for legal and medical matters, and a short resource of prayers
and quotes.
With
respect, the book honors the reader’s personal journey, letting him know that
any feelings -- anger, doubt,
fear, or loneliness -- are legitimate and do not indicate moral or spiritual
failure. Going Home seeks to be a companion, recognizing the sense of
isolation that dying foists upon even the most gregarious people. This book
also dares to address intimate questions; what do you say to your spouse, to
your grandchildren, and how does one deal with doubt about having been a good
parent, spouse or friend? Saying goodbye is a tough task.
The authors write from a Christian perspective,
emphasizing without dogma or theological trivialities the simple assurance of a
personal faith in Christ. As a two
time cancer survivor, Diane Arnett cuts through any trite sentimentality addressing
the issues honestly. Drawing on twenty five years of pastoral experience, Rev.
Kemp illustrates God’s grace in a language that the dying will understand. Even
in the chapters that deal with practical matters such as making a will, the
authors write in a way which affirms the reader as a child of God.
